Key Ingredients
Rendered by hand, our 100% grass-fed beef tallow is purified simply with water, salt, and heat. Although we initially started making our bars with rendered tallow, we've since transitioned to using only suet. A more pure, and nutrient-dense tallow that is derived from the kidneys.
Organic essential oils that are 100% cold-pressed or steam-distilled. No artificial fragrances, alcohol or oil based, are used as our scenting options.
Pure distilled water without fluoride, and lye (sodium hydroxide). Traditional ingredients that have stood the test of time. While lye is caustic in its rawest form, it's an inactive ingredient that has evaporated in a bar of soap once fully cured.

Frequently Asked Questions
Our business — manufacturing and all operations — are out of London, ON, Canada. All ingredients are sourced within Ontario (excluding the origins of organic essential oils), where we source the beef fat from our local butcher, hand-render into tallow and suet, then hand-mix each and every batch of soap.
Shipments within Canada are processed via the Toronto, ON sorting facility. United States shipments are processed via the Niagara Falls, NY facility.
Tallow soap offers numerous benefits due to its unique composition and compatibility with human skin. Rich in fatty acids like stearic and oleic acid, tallow closely resembles the natural oils found in our skin, making it highly moisturizing and nourishing. This helps to strengthen the skin’s natural barrier, preventing excessive dryness and irritation. Unlike synthetic detergents and commercial soaps that often contain harsh chemicals and artificial fragrances, tallow soap is typically free from unnecessary additives, making it ideal for those with sensitive skin or conditions like eczema and psoriasis. Its dense, creamy lather provides a luxurious cleansing experience while gently removing dirt and excess oil without stripping away essential moisture. Additionally, tallow is a sustainable ingredient, as it is a byproduct of the beef industry, reducing waste and promoting eco-friendly skincare choices. Unlike plant-based oils that require extensive processing, tallow is minimally refined, ensuring a more natural and wholesome soap. With its long-lasting hardness and stability, tallow soap doesn’t become mushy in the shower and lasts longer than many vegetable-based alternatives, providing excellent value while delivering superior skin benefits.
Absolutely not!
During the soap-making process, tallow reacts with sodium hydroxide (lye) in a process called saponification. This transforms the fat into soap and glycerin, both of which dissolve in water instead of forming greasy deposits.
Great question.
When O'Naturelle first started, we made our bars with triple-rendered beef tallow (tallow includes ALL fat cuts).
Since, we have fully transitioned to pure suet in ALL of our products.
Suet is a more "premium" tallow. It's more nutrient-dense and purified as it's derived solely from the fat surrounding the kidneys. It also has a much less "beefy" smell.
We source our tallow from a high-quality local butcher. It's grass-fed beef that ensures we use a sustainable and natural ingredient while minimizing waste.
Surprisingly, not at all!
Especially with the use of suet in all bars.
Our tallow is carefully rendered to remove impurities, resulting in a neutral, mild scent. Any added essential oils or natural ingredients will influence the final fragrance, but even then, organic essential oils are very mild compared to any synthetically made fragrance or perfume found in your common department-store soaps.
Absolutely! Tallow soap is free from harsh detergents and synthetic additives, making it an excellent choice for those with sensitive, dry, or irritated skin.
Yes! Tallow contains natural fatty acids that help balance the skin’s oil production without clogging pores. It’s gentle yet effective for cleansing acne-prone or oily skin.
Not at all!
Our soap is made using only natural ingredients. We keep it simple and pure—just like traditional soap should be.
- Tallow (active ingredient)
- If scented, an organic essential oil (active ingredient)
- Lye mixture of sodium hydroxide and distilled water (inactive ingredient)
What are active vs inactive ingredients?
Active ingredients are components that have a direct effect on the skin, providing a specific benefit such as cleansing, moisturizing, exfoliating, or treating a skin condition.
Inactive ingredients support the formula but don’t have a direct therapeutic effect. They help with texture, stability, preservation, or application but don’t actively treat or change the skin.
During the soap-making process, sodium hydroxide reacts with fats (tallow) in a chemical reaction called saponification, transforming them into soap and glycerin.
By the end of the curing process, no sodium hydroxide remains—it has completely reacted with the oils and turned into sodium tallowate (soap).
A good pH level for body bar soap is typically between 8 and 10.
Our tallow soap bars consistently test at a pH level of 9.
Why?
- Effectiveness – Soap needs to be alkaline to properly cleanse by breaking down oils and lifting dirt from the skin.
- Saponification Requirement – True soap (made with natural fats and lye) naturally has a higher pH because of how it is chemically structured.
- Skin Tolerance – While human skin has a natural pH of around 4.5–5.5, a well-formulated soap at pH 8–10 cleanses effectively without overly disrupting the skin’s moisture barrier, especially when made with nourishing ingredients like tallow.
- Mildness & Safety – If soap’s pH is too high (above 10), it can be too harsh. If it’s too low, it may not lather or cleanse well.
Yes! Our tallow soap is versatile and can be used as a body soap, hand soap, and even as a gentle shampoo bar for some hair types.
Hair gets a little tricky and varies much more between each individual than the skin on our bodies. This is something that we recommend testing for yourself to see if it works as a shampoo for you.
Tallow-based soaps tend to be harder and last longer than many plant-based soaps, especially when kept dry between uses.
A soap dish that allows drainage will help extend its lifespan, as well as a soap bag that helps the bar foam more (since there aren't any synthetic foaming agents in our formula) and uses less of the product.
Each bar tends to last the average individual 3-5 weeks. We have recently removed subscriptions as the bars were lasting far longer than most customers anticipated.
A good problem to have.
You often hear "this product isn't for everyone", but this product truly is. It's a commodity that everyone needs and that everyone benefits from.
That being said, if you aren't satisfied with the product itself or your experience with O'Naturelle, we will 100% refund you.
Every order and customer is personal to us — not in the bullsh*t way corporations call their employees "family" — and at the end of the day, it's about leaving the world in a better place than it was before we got it.
