What's so good about tallow in soap?
Tallow is structurally close to the oils your skin already makes — the same fatty acids, in similar proportions. So instead of stripping your skin and leaving it tight, it cleans while leaving that barrier intact. It also carries vitamins A, D, E, and K naturally, not as additives. People made soap this way for centuries before cheap detergents took over.
Should I be worried about the lye (sodium hydroxide)?
Great [and common] question! Lye on its own *is* caustic. However, this is what most people don't know: lye is how every real soap on earth is made, including the gentlest ones. During saponification, the lye reacts completely with the tallow and becomes soap. There is no lye left in the finished bar! Iif there were, it wouldn't be soap. We cure every bar for four weeks and test before it ships.
Is this good for skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis?
I can't promise miracles or any "healing aids" with soap, or any of our other products. What I can say is that a lot of our customers with eczema and psoriasis tell us this is the first bar that doesn't set them off. There are no detergents, no fragrance oils, no preservatives to react to. That's not the same as a treatment, and I won't pretend otherwise. If you have a diagnosed condition, check with your doctor. And if it doesn't work for your skin, the refund is no-questions-asked. That policy exists for exactly this.
Does it smell like beef?
Not usually! If it does, it'll be very faint. The scented bars smell like their essential oils. The unscented bar smells like almost nothing, which is exactly what the most sensitive skin wants. Depending on seasonal changes, this can slightly fluctuate, but once the tallow has been turned into soap and cured, almost all of that scent has dissipated.
Will it clog my pores?
Tallow is non-comedogenic for most skin. It absorbs rather than sitting on top the way mineral oil does. Of course, everyone's skin is different, so if you're acne-prone, start with the unscented bar and see how your skin responds. Most peoples concerns are with applying tallow directly to your skin, as opposed to applying tallow in soap form, which behaves much differently.
How long does a bar last?
About 5 to 7 weeks with daily use. With our complimentary soap bags, you can improve the lather (much more suds) and extend the life of the bar. The biggest factor is generally how you maintain the bar after use... a bar sitting in a puddle dissolves fast. Keep it on a dish or in one of our soap bags between uses, and you'll get the long end of that range.
Can I use it on my face?
Yes! Absolutely. These are FULL body bars. It's gentle enough for both. For hair, while many customers use it as a 2-in-1, you might find better success with the shampoo bar instead; it's balanced differently for your scalp. Hair is a little trickier can require a little more trial and error.
